Friday's Hike

If I am going on the Friday hike, how will I know when and where?

If you plan to hike on Friday you will receive an email the week before the hike with details about where and when to meet. The hike usually takes place at a State forest near Camp Timber Trails. The hike will be approx. 10 miles in length at a moderate pace with rest stops as needed. The terrain is usually moderately hilly. The trail conditions will vary from wooded trails to dirt roads. The hiking time with lunch and breaks will be approx. 5 hours. After the hike we will make sure that you find your way to Camp Timber Trails. (Remember that you can use this as qualifying hikes towards a working pack dog certificate- bring your dog packs fully loaded and pre-weighed.)

What should I bring?

Don't forget to bring plenty of water for your dog (and you), your dog's tags and proof of vaccinations (the park rangers may ask to see proof of your dogs rabies shot). For yourself, make sure you wear proper footgear and comfortable clothes. Please dress for the weather- we hike rain, shine or mud! Don't forget to pack a lunch!

What is a qualifying hike?

  1. Dog must carry a weight equal to a minimum of 30% of the dog's weight. This weight shall not decrease except by normal consumption of items such as food or water.
  2. Pack trips must be on natural terrain such as hiking trails or cross-country.
  3. OPTION 1: Dog must pack a minimum of 30 miles. Each trip must be a minimum of 10 miles per day or an overnight camp out with a 5 miles in and 5 miles out. A minimum of one trip must include an overnight camp out. (The Camp N Pack hike will count as one 10 mile leg)
OPTION 2: Dog must pack a minimum of 40 miles. Each trip must be a minimum of 10 miles per day.
  4. Elevation gain may be substituted for mileage in the following manner: 1,000 feet of elevation is equivalent to 1 mile of flat terrain. Elevation gain will be figured as the difference between the highest and lowest points of the trip.
  5. Packing requirements shall be spread out over a minimum of 2 trips.
  6. An impartial witness must sign the form to be sent to the Committee verifying proof of distances and dog competing.

Our hike leader is willing to sign forms for anyone wanting to earn a leg towards their pack dog title-we will have forms available... know the weight of your dog and your pack!
